My maternal great-grandfather was from the Tillicoultry (wow! look at this early postcard on the Clack. GenWeb site for an idea of the terrain) - Clackmannan area, in Clackmannanshire, Scotland - so this is where I shall start this page. There are many Condies of various spellings (Conde, Condie, Condy) in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA today. I shall continue to use the Condie spelling throughout as that is what I am used to.
James CONDIE was born ca 1800 in Scotland - the birth registry records of his eight brothers and sisters have been located in the Old Scottish Parochial Church Records - his has not! (naturally - such is genealogy). He has the particular honour of being my great-grandfather (and since he was still fathering children well into his seventies) I am sure that he can lay claim to many more of you out there.
I have just started this page and would appreciate any input at all. I will try to post resources and transcribe what information I do come across for the Condie surname! If you have resources, antecdotes etc I would be pleased to post them on this site. If you have a Condie page - let me know - I haven't found any others yet on the net!
My great-grandmother, Ann BROWN, daughter of Jesse Brown and Annis HASKINS of Wolford Township, Grenville County, was the second wife of James Condie. They were married 18 Jul 1861 in Portage du Fort - he would have been about 60 years of age, Ann would have been about 28. They had at least 8 children; including 2 sets of twins.
James and his first wife Isabella DRYSDALE (daughter of James Drysdale and Christian FERGUS) had 13 children (10 of whom were sons). Is it any wonder that the Condie tribe is such a large one now!
After James Condie's death in 1878; Ann Brown Condie apparently ran a boarding house for labourers with the Canadian Pacific Railway, perhaps in Mattawa, Calvin Township (or between Pembroke and Mattawa any way). She is buried in Calvin Twp - naturally her gravestone indicates that she was the wife of John, instead of James, Condie. (This apparently caused some problems for the efficient Condie researchers who were active well before I came on the scene as a researcher.)
