This page is intended for our early Canadian settlers of this surname however it may be spelled. (Hawthorne, Hawthorn, Hauthorn, Hautorn etc). (Some people are still funny about surname spellings and insist that their ancestors couldn't possibly have anything to do with 'your' family because that's not how 'they spelt it' - I say phooey to that! - if there is any chance that any of us out there can 'connect' as cousins (or not), what does it matter how the name was spelled by government officials or various family branches 200 years ago!) Let us proceed to sort out the various family groupings within Canada [and count our blessings that our ancestors came here instead of to the States - cause there's gazillions of them down there!]. I shall probably use the Hawthorne spelling throughout because that is how the spelling came down through my family and its what I'm used to.

Eventually I hope we will end up sorting out the various family groupings in Northern Ireland (a newly found 'cousin' here in Ontario was just over doing some research - I can't wait for her to get her info compiled). If your Hawthorne family originated from Northern Ireland there could well be a connection - I've had several enquiries from Australia that had origins within the same general area. I've got to try writing to various people that I corresponded with before buying my computer; for permission to use their info and names! If I mention your name somewhere in here without your permission and you object to it being on the page please let me know. If you are interested in adding resources or information to the page please do so!

If there is a high probability that your ancestor could match up 'over there' in Northern Ireland, I'm definitely interested any information you may have. I don't know what course this page will take, but lets wait and see eh? (Oh! by the way don't expect me to be formal or serious on any of these pages - this genealogy stuff is fun! and besides it's my page eh!) This page is brand new - if you have any suggestions or complaints (what?) let me know!

I have set up a 'researchers' page for the Hawthorne surname. See if your ancestor is listed, if not why not join us in our search?

~ MY ANCESTOR ~
AFTER ALL HE WAS THE CAUSE FOR THIS PAGE!

My Hawthorne ancestor came from County Down in Northern Ireland. Patrick HAWTHORNE married Selina Emeline (Selena?) DOWNEY in March of 1847 and they must have left almost immediately for their new home in Upper Canada, finally settling in Goulbourne Township, Carleton County, Ontario (south of Ottawa). His father John Hawthorne is listed as a shoemaker from Ballymacromwell, Co. Down.

We are working on sorting out possible siblings for Patrick (supposedly 2 other brothers came to Canada about the same time period). Hans Hawthorne and his wife Sarah WARD were at one time in Carelton Place, Lanark County. As this map indicates, Carleton Place was not that far from where Patrick homesteaded at Lot 7, Concession 7, Goulborne Twp, Carleton County. (on the historical maps of 1862, they are located between Munster and Ashton Corners - closer to Munster).
