Crvena Zvezda may be the most schizophrenic club in the world. In Germany it is known as Roter Stern; in France as Etoile Rouge; in Spain as Estrella Roja; in Italy as Stella Rosa; in English, of course, Red Star Belgrade. Under whichever name, the 1991 European and world club champions stood revered as one of the pillars of the worldwide establishment, and the club is known as the "absolute queen of the Yugoslav football"!

Team that won European Cup in 1991

10 years later

Red Star was formally set up by students of Belgrade University after the war. Many members of the Red Star moved abroad, which become an on-going exodus of more than 40 players including stars like Dragan Dzajic, Dragan Stojkovic, Dejan Savicevic, Robert Prosinecki, Darko Pancev, etc. This explains why Red Star for all their talent boast only one victory in the European Cup (1991), and one runners-up spot in UEFA Cup (1979).

Celebration in Bari '91

Red Star belongs to the very cream of European major teams. It ranks 11th in the overall all time European placing. In the European Cup, Red Star is placed 8th. Eminent sports journal in ranking the European football teams, listed Red Star as the best European team ever. In half a century of playing, on national level, Red Star is unsurpassed. The Red Star won 22 championships and 19 national Cups, which is 70% of all titles won. This is the record that will be very hard to beat. Also, the Red Star won numerous international tournaments, and is always present at European Cup competitions.

Red Star's fans are familiar with the greatness of Red Star, and for those who are not that familiar, I prepared an overview of the most important and fascinating facts there is about Red Star Football Club. Only after reviewing these facts, one can truly appreciate the greatness and importance of the Red Star in Yugoslav and European football. But Red Star Football Club is not the only team under this name. Red Star fields teams in 26 different sports with 6500 people employed which makes Red Star the biggest sport association in Yugoslavia and perhaps in the world. For comparison, Real has only two teams, while Barcelona fields teams in seven sports. Now, that's something! I'll prepare summary for all Zvezda teams. Also, visit Red Star Stadium; better known as Marakana, with a capacity of 56,000 (all seater stadium).

Delije, Red Star famous supporters, can make some spectacular shows. Red Star's museum is the first museum of its kind in the world. It is not a trophy room, but real museum. It was opened in 1985, way before Barcelona and Ajax opened theirs. Enjoy!!!
