Special guests
Mathew Johnson
&
Sherry Johnson
Mathew
Johnson competes and entertains extensively
across North America. As an Open class competitor in both fiddling
and stepdancing, he regularly places in the top five of both categories,
including winning the Barre, Vermont Open Class, and the "Lets Get Wild"
category in the Shreveport, Louisiana contest. He won the Most Entertaining
Fiddler of all competitors at the Canadian Open Fiddle Championship in
1999, for the fifth time, as well as the Novelty Class for the third year
in a row. His step-dancing group, Triple Dynamite, won the 1999 Canadian
Group Step Dancing Championship. Mathew became a Finalist for the
fifth consecutive year in the Specialty Performance and Instrumentalist
categories of the national YTV Youth Achievement Awards, placing in the
top four in Canada this year. Although he began the co-op Engineering
program at the University of Waterloo in September of 1999, Mathew continues
to teach private fiddle lessons and play trumpet with the Stratford Concert
Band.
Sherry
Johnson, Mathew's sister, is a Toronto-based
step dancer, fiddler, and piano accompanist. She comes to Chelmsford
two weekends per month to teach stepdancing at the Northland Motel and
Restaurant. During her last visits, Sherry promoted the
traditional Canadian cultural activities through participatory workshops
in some of our schools. As a former high school music teacher and
Director of Music for grades JK to 12, and a present university music instructor
and private step dancing teacher, Sherry has a wealth of educational and
performance experience which enables her to draw all students, of any age,
into the exciting world of Canadian step dancing and fiddling.
Mathew and Sherry will be
special guests at the Fiddleworks Monthly Dance on December 1st at 7 pm
a the Club 50 in Chelmsford.
