Welcome to my Lens Hood Page

This lens hood for a Canon EF-S 10-22/3.4-4.5 or a Canon EF 17-40/4.0 is a model #EW-83E. This hood is rather shallow in its depth. I wanted to make a lens hood that offered more protection from the sun. Starting with a pencil drawing of the basic layout of the hood. I added the horizontal angle of view and on the side view of the hood was the vertical angle of view.

From the basic drawing I created a prototype hood made from cardboard and secured with masking tape. With the hood in the proper position I checked to make sure there were no vignetted corners.

The metal that I used is galvanized sheet stock .011" thickness (30 gauge). The top and bottom pieces have a short 90' flap at each end to make the hood quite ridget. The middle section is 120mm square with a hole of 85mm in the center. The flaps on either side of the hole have the leading edge folded back on its self and are lightly hammered flat.

With some solvent and steel wool all the residue from the soldering process was cleaned off.

The mounting plate was made from some scrap fibre board, 5mm thick. It was centered and fastened to a piece of plywood. With a parting tool the hole was cut out at a diameter of about 79mm and finished to size of 81.5mm. Some sanding to get rid of the fibres broken out at the edge made it ready for the next step. Using a piece of metal with a 90' bend at the end and filed to shape of 1.5mm thick by 2mm long. I proceeded to gouge out a channel in the center of the fibre board.

The fit of the mounting board was comfortable snug. To prevent the board from over rotating, the channel has to have a small block of hardwood glued in it. Once this is done the rotation will stop at the same horizontal line as the camera base. The mounting board has to be screwd on to the metal lens hood. Using a flat black paint, the hood was covered both inside and out with 2 coats allowing complete drying in between. The final part of the construction is to glue black cotton velveteen on the inside. This material is dead black and reasonable easy to use. Note the glue (yellow carpenters) should not be too thick as it will soak through the material.

The lens hood on the left was made sometime ago it is quite large (200*140*120 deep, weighs 230 gm 8oz.)and was made from 6mm plywood. The model on the right is (220*140*70 deep, weighs 195mg 6.8oz.)and is made from sheet metal.
