Huntsville Insulator Swap - October 13, 2001

This was the Tenth Annual edition of this show and it was held this year at Bruce Templeton's lovely home just outside of Huntsville, Ontario. It took about three hours to drive from home and the directions were good and I found it easily. Only one wrong turn but that was quickly straightened around and I was back on track. The drive through Highway 141 from Highway 69 to Highway 11 was glorious with the leaves in full colour. Hillsides covered with reds, oranges, yellows and browns, mixing with the dark greens of the pines.

Setup started at 11 AM with trading set to begin at 12 Noon. There were about 12 or 13 sellers set up on tables in Bruce's back yard. The temperature that perfect that day hovering around 15° C or about 60° F. It was raining when I left home in the morning, but by time I rolled through Parry Sound it was drying up. The fall sun played hide and seek with the clouds all afternoon, but the only things falling were brilliant autumn leaves and the prices at Rick Soller's table. :-)

About 6 or 7 of the sellers there I had met at John DeLarge's sale in July. John was there, along with Brett Bloxam who I knew only from eBay. Rick Soller made the trip from Illinois and others came from near Ottawa. Mike and Debbie Csorbay were there again with a few of their young birds in tow.

Throughout the day, many glass and porcelain pieces alike were ogled, admired, fondled, bought, sold and traded. There was something for everyone's collecting taste. Bruce did outstanding grill duty serving up burgers and sausage for lunch followed by a selection of cakes for dessert. Later in the afternoon, he backed his car out of the garage for the guys to admire. A 1955 Thunderbird convertible in mint condition. What an beautiful machine and the sound of its engine idling was pure, sweet music.

As the afternoon wound down, and the sales slowed down, people began to pack up to leave around 3 PM. I finally packed up and pulled out around 4:30 PM and headed North for home.

I picked up several nice pieces including a CD 168 HEMI in dark olive amber, a CD 422 AGEE in light purple, two CD 102 <> ponies in royal purple, a nice CD 145 AM INS base embossed in blue, and a couple of other odds and ends. Rick Soller was offering some great table clearing bargains as the afternoon progressed. I sold numerous pieces from my table including several Aussie spares, a CD 325 PYREX giant and even a few of my porcelain ones. Deb Csorbay picked up a CD 114 HEMI I had for sale and immediately spotted a ghost embossing on both sides of it that I had missed. She went away happy with it. My tally at the end of the day showed that I had only spent $15 more than I sold so I figured I did pretty good.

Another excellent day for me, as I managed to come home with some money left in my pocket. Insulator collectors are a great bunch of people. I did take a few pictures while I was there with my digital camera. Click the thumbnails below to bring up larger versions of the pictures. If you look closely in the background of Brett Bloxam's table (2nd pic), you can see many of Bruce's gems lined up on the window sill inside. I am ready for the 2002 edition of this sale. The next sale anywhere close to me will be in April near Ottawa somewhere.
