The day dawned rainy, wet and cold, but I was headed south anyway, on the road at 8:00 AM. Off to Huntsville and the home of Bruce Templeton, where this sale was also held last year. Bruce had cleared out his double garage and the early birds had their tables set up inside. I arrived about 10:50 AM. I ended up half in and half out of the door, with a large picnic umbrella over the outer end of the table. That kept most of the water off the table. It did rain off and on most of the day, with a brief sunny period mid-afternoon. Bruce said there had been three inches of snow on the ground two days earlier, but it had melted away, thankfully.
There were 13 or 14 people with sales tables set up. A huge variety of glass and porcelain insulators of all kinds were available. Rick Soller made the trip up from Illinois with a long table full of goodies. There was someone there from New Jersey. Others came from all over Southern and Central Ontario, and as far east as the Ottawa area. Mike and Deb Csorbay were there, with a few baby birds in tow as usual. I was the only one from Northern Ontario there.
A number of other people stopped by to look, shop, swap and talk. James Mulvey made the trip up from Cobourg and left a load of suspensions with Rick Soller. Barrett Nicpon and his parents arrived mid-afternoon and spent a lot of time browsing around, meeting people, swapping and buying. I gave Barrett some freebie CD 122s and 128s, and Rick swapped a bunch of stuff with him. I gave Rick the remainder of my box of CD 122s and 128s to add to his load. Phil Ort arrived from St. Catherines with a bunch of REALLY big porcelain multi-part tower insulators for Rick as well. These units were about 4'-6" tall and 97 pounds each when assembled. The late afternoon entertainment was watching Rick pack four of these into his little Toyota pickup truck, along with everything else he had to take home. He pulled away with an inch or so of supension travel left. I hope he got across the border OK with his load.
I sold a few pieces, traded a few and bought 9 new insulators in all. James Mulvey gave me a couple of Hemi-42s that I didn't have. Here's a list of what I bought:
I traded an odd bakelite lightning arrestor to Rick for four of these pieces, bought a few, then traded a CD 420 AGEE and some cash to Rick for the CD 567 piece. Unfortunately, I didn't have the digital camera with me for the trip, so I have no pictures of the actual sale.
Late afternoon saw the barbeque fired up to cook burgers and sausages for everyone. Pop and Tim Horton donuts capped off the refreshments.
People started packing up tables around 3:00 PM, while I didn't pack up until closer to 4:00. Many of us there watched in amazement (or maybe amusement?) as Rick did a masterful job of sqeezing everything into his little truck. I headed North about 5:00 PM and got home around 8:00. Total distance for the day was about 500 km. or 310 miles.
Next show will be in Perth again in the spring of 2003. Hope to see everyone there!
