This was the first time for John DeLarge hosting an event like this. It was also my first ever insulator sale. The directions were very good and I found his house easily. Signs decorated with insulators in the home stretch made things easier.
Setup started around 10 AM with trading starting as soon as the pieces came out of the boxes. Setup went quickly with helpful hands and dollies for moving boxes of insulators. There were about 11 or 12 sellers set up on tables in John's back yard. The temperature that day was around 30° C or about 85° F and very humid. There was very little breeze in the back yard so most of us ended up a sticky, sweaty bunch by the end of the day.
It was a real pleasure to finally meet people I had purchased from through eBay and to meet other people I only knew of by name and reputation previously. Martin Caverly (crossarm on eBay) and Lee Brewer (NIA Information Director) spring to mind. Several others travelled up from the Northern states and from all over Southern Ontario to attend. Mike and Debbie Csorbay were there with a few of their young birds along for the ride in order to be fed on schedule through the day.
Throughout the day, many glass and porcelain pieces alike were ogled, admired, fondled, bought, sold and traded. Lee Brewer led an inpromptu session of Colour 101 showing us a few of his CD 162s in Peacock, Electric and Cobalt Blue. There were plenty of quality insulators there to be admired and/or purchased.
I brought along my collection of Australian glass for display (not for sale) and many lively discussions resulted from that. I might have created a few new Aussie glass collectors that day, as Martin Caverly and Lee Brewer both purchased Aussie glass pieces from me. It was Lee's first ever Aussie insulator.
John proved to be an excellent grill master serving up burgers for lunch as well as a terrific host. As the afternoon heated up, and the sales slowed down, people began to pack up to leave around 2 PM. I finally packed up and pulled out a little after 3 PM and headed into downtown Wasaga Beach to go for a swim. After much circling and waiting to get a parking spot, I finally hit the refreshing water. A quick supper at McDonalds on the waterfront and it was time to head North for home.
I picked up several nice pieces including a CD 154 HEMI in bright Hemi Blue, a CD 559 FOLEMBRAY from France, a CD 190/191 TWO PIECE TRANSPOSITION set, a lovely CD 162 McLAUGHLIN in delft blue, some CD 143s and a handful of other pieces. I sold a CD 234 PYREX carnie, a CD 154 AGEE in blue-gray, a CD 423 AGM in amber, some small spools, and other assorted pieces.
All in all I felt the day went very well for me, I managed to sell more glass than I bought and came home with money left in my pocket. It was an excellent first time sale and I met a great bunch of guys and ladies. I got to hold numerous insulators that I will probably never be able to own. I did take some pictures while I was there with my digital camera, but the photos were eaten by my computer when I transferred them from the camera. I hope that John will host another one this coming summer!
