As I Wait

By R. Chaffee

As the snow falls, the darkness of winter sets in
As the sky grows darker sooner then before
I wait to be called upon.....

As the snow melts, the darkness of winter leaves
As the trees start to bloom and birds return
I wait to be called upon.....

As the sky grows lighter, longer then before
Asthe laughter of childern is heard for miles
I wait to be called upon.....

As the leaves turn brown, falling to the earth
As the brisk winds move closer to chill the night
I wait to be called upon.....

As the snow falls on my ninetieth year
As my breath is harder to hear exiting my lips
I wait to be called upon.....

As I attend the funerals of my friends
As the list of them grows shorter
I wait to be called upon.....

As I sleep, waiting for my dreams to come
As the sunshine of my ninety-fifth year peeks through the window
I no longer wait to be called upon.....

    As I enter the unknown
As I wonder what will become of me
I see my friends waiting to be called upon by me.....
