John and Renate Gammon your hosts at the Crooked Tree bed and breakfastJohnWe are your proud hosts at the Crooked Tree bed

Hi! We are John and Renate Gammon. We purchased the old McVittie residence at 250 Edmund Street, Sudbury, in 1991. With our three children, we rapidly settled in to this fine old home. We discovered a joy in "do-it-yourself" activities and during the first few years we built fences, planter boxes, large areas of deck, a water garden and swimming pool. This lead irrevocably to learning about annuals, perennials, bulbs, rhizomes and most importantly in Canada, particularly in northern Ontario - plant hardiness zones. Many Sudbury residents drive a few hours to their "camp" or recreation cottage, we wanted to have our recreation location right at our doorstep. We believe we have succeeded in creating an oasis of beauty and tranquility right here in the heart of Sudbury.

We have seen a lot of the world before putting our roots down here in northern Ontario. John spent his childhood years in England and Iran, while Renate grew up in Austria and Argentina. John is a geologist, researched his Ph.D. in Norway, and followed this with postdoctoral research in California and Princeton, New Jersey. Renate is a professional language instructor and speaks fluent Spanish, Portugese, Italian, German and Norwegian. We met in Canada, got married in Norway, had our three kids in the Philippines and eventually moved back to Canada, living in Vancouver and Oakville before settling in Sudbury.

In the summers of 1996 and 1997, we toured England and Newfoundland on our vacations staying exclusively in Bed and Breakfasts along the way. It struck us that our home in Sudbury, with its large size, vintage architecture and historic connections would make an excellent B&B. We discovered that in order to meet the local requirements for a business license we needed to invest in major renovations to ensure that fire and safety codes were met and exceeded. Everything was completed over the winter of 1997/98 and we opened our doors in June for our first guests. We have really enjoyed meeting our guests, making them feel welcome in their native language, introducing them to Sudbury and making new friends from around the world. Now we are moving on and, as of December 31st 2002, have reluctantly turned our back on the B&B operation. If you are looking for a long term arrangement in Sudbury - give us a call !! You never know we may have a vacancy. We do hope that old friends and past guest will still stop by and visit with us !
