Population Education Levels

Slightly more than 34% of the people in the 45+ age grouping achieved up to a grade eight level of education, while less than 1% of those in the 15-24 age category attained the same level of education.

Although the paragraph above indicates an extreme contrast between the two age groupings in attaining elementary education, the differences are less dramatic the higher the level of education. For example, a little over 19% of the 15-24 year old group have completed grade 12 compared to somewhat less than 10% in the over 45 classification. Educational levels for the population living in the Local Board area experienced an increase in most categories from the 1986 to the 1991 Census. Some of the educational levels achieved are still slightly below provincial averages. For example, the data from the 1991 Census indicates that while approximately 15% of the working age population in our area had achieved a grade 12 , 16% of Ontario’s working age population succeeded in acquiring a grade 12 education. Also, 15% of the population in our area have 0-8 years of schooling while only 12% of the Ontario population have 0-8 level of education. These figures indicate that the North continues to lag behind Ontario in acquiring basic levels of education. However, the percentage of people possessing a trade certificate in the Sudbury and Manitoulin Board area is somewhat higher than the provincial average

( 4% in the Board area as compared to 3 % provincially). This is due primarily to the fact that mining and mining-related industries employ a large percentage of tradespeople.

The chart below compares educational attainment levels between the 1986 and 1991 Census in the Sudbury and Manitoulin Training and Adjustment Board area.
