What is "Job Bank®"?

Job Bank© is Human Resources Development Canada's (HRDC) system for distributing job vacancies across Canada.

Job Bank® distributes the jobs using automated "Kiosks" which are located in Human Resource Centres (HRC), libraries, malls, and other remote sites in every community.

How do the jobs get on this web site?

Each day (first thing in the morning) we extract the databases for the Sudbury, St.Thomas, and Windsor HRCs from Job Bank® and format it for display on this web site.

Where do the Jobs come from?

HRC "Labour Exchange" staff receive orders from employers in their area of service. Job vacancies are received by phone, in- person visits to employers, faxes, etc.

When the HRC staff discuss the vacancy with the employer, the "area of distribution" is negotiated, and the vacancy is entered into HRDC's "NESS" corporate database.

The vacancy is then distributed from the NESS database to the appropriate kiosks via the Job Bank® network.

How to advertise a job in Job Bank®?

To advertise a job in our Internet Job Banks you will have to call a Human Resource Centre (Canada Employment Centre) closest to you. When you call, the job order clerk will get the job description from you and specify a distribution area for your ad. The distribution area denotes which offices you want the job to be advertised in. For instance if you call from St. Thomas, Ont. the job order can be distributed to St. Thomas only, the St. Thomas management area, South Western Ontario or Canada Wide.
If you specify a job order for local distribution only, the job ad will not show on the Internet, unless your city or area has a jobbank on the internet. Presently we only have jobbanks for certain cities or areas. Here is a list of them .
If you aren't from these areas you can't advertise in these job banks unless you tag the distribution as national. Anything tagged national (Canada wide) will show up in our National Jobbank on the internet.

What is the "area of distribution"?

That refers to how far the EMPLOYER wants the HRC to send or "advertise" the job in the Job Bank® system. IF the employer wants to keep the job in the immediate area, it is distributed only the kiosks in that HRC area.

If the employer wants the job advertised further, it can be sent to all kiosks in the region or province.

Finally, IF the employer wants the vacancy advertised nationally the job is distributed across Canada via the "National Job Bank" option of the Job Bank® System.

What do you mean by "Area" Job Bank®?

That's what we call the jobs for our areas of service...

St.Thomas = St.Thomas-Elgin plus jobs shared with us (per the area of distribution) by the HRCs in Sudbury, Woodstock, Tillsonburg.

Sudbury = Sudbury-Middlesex plus jobs shared with us (per the area of distribution) by the HRCs in St.Thomas, Woodstock, Tillsonburg.

Windsor = Windsor-Essex plus jobs shared with Windsor HRC (per the area of distribution) by the HRCs in Leamington, Chatham, etc.

So, where are the jobs for other areas?

The HRDC Job Bank® system downloads only the jobs for our area of service to our kiosks. That's what we transfer to our web site.

We had a bit of a head start because we have been displaying the area jobs on our local bulletin board system for some time.

Other HRC's are going to be doing the same thing, and we have shared our scripts with HRCs across Canada so that they can get on-line soon.

Talk with your local HRC to find out if they're planning to use the Internet to display their jobs.

Also, HRDC National Head Quarters in Ottawa is working on a National Site which will include all orders (employers permitting) for all HRCs in Canada! The National site should be operating this summer.

What's "National" Job Bank®?

That's what HRDC calls the Job Bank® option that sends the job vacancies to all the kiosks in the Job Bank® network (per the area of distribution).

The difference between the new Job Bank Service and the National Job Bank via St. Thomas

The National Job Bank (via St. Thomas) only contains job ads that have been designated for distribution into the National Job Bank. Most Jobs are not advertised in the National Job Bank unless an employer thinks that he/she won't be able to find a suitable employee in their local area. The new HRDC Job Bank contains all job orders including local and national orders. This job bank is also updated constantly.

Who is entitled to seek work in Canada?

Only those persons listed below are entitled to seek work in Canada:

  • Canadian Citizens, or
  • Permanent Residents of Canada, or
  • Individuals authorized by Canada Immigration to seek work in Canada.

Why do some jobs include the employer's name and address while others do not?

There are two types or classes of jobs in Job Bank - we call them "regular" and "display" vacancies.

"Regular" vacancies do not include the employer information because the employer has asked the HRC to pre-screen applicants before they apply for the job.

"Display" vacancies include the full employer information because the employer would like applicants to apply directly for interview.

How often do you update the jobs on this web site?

We upload the data once each business day (monday to friday) at about 7:45am.

I want to look at all the jobs for a particular area, can I do that?

Just include the geographic area in your keyword search.

For example, if you want to find out what jobs are listed for Regina in National Job Bank just use "Regina" in your keyword search.

If you want to check a particular province just use the following abbreviations in your search:

Newfoundland             = nfl
New Brunswick            = nb
Prince Edward Island     = pei
Nova Scotia              = ns
Quebec                   = que
Ontario                  = ont
Manitoba                 = man
Saskatchewan             = sas
Alberta                  = alt
British Columbia         = bc
Yukon                    = yuk
North West Territories   = nwt
