I haven't organized any lists, indexes or pedigrees yet as I am still
learning construction methods - so these are the basics of my family tree:
My father, Ultan KELLY's, ancestry is Roman Catholic
consisting of:
The Southern Irish connection - William: son of Daniel KELLEY
and Maria FLEMING, married in Ontario in 1845. We have not yet been able to ascertain their origins (per census records, they were both born in Ireland). My father thought his grandfather, Daniel may have been from Tipperary. If only they had been married the year before, in 1844 - Holy Cross church, was previously known as Sacred Croix and had been handled by the french who nearly always provided parents names and residence, and I wouldn't be in the quandry that I find myself in at this time - so much for progress!
Our Quebec french-canadian side -Marie Laura: daughter of Francois RICARD and Adelaide MOUSSEAU, married in 1864, on Calumet Island, Quebec. The Quebec system of record keeping is well documented - except for that later period around the late 1700's, early 1800's(?) in which I am having trouble trying to locate a couple of the marriages further up the 'trunk' of the family tree.
What the heck it's my page isn't it, I might as well list my problems here? Since I compiled this side of my tree from the usual available well-known resources (Drouin, Jette, Loiselle, Tanguay etc) there is every probability that there are errors in the genealogy - since going 'on line' I have heard so much about errors and ommissions in these sources - however I've done the best I can for now; and will have to get more into depth when time permits. Right now I would like to track down the couples in my direct line of decendence that are proving to be 'roadblocks'. These then are on my 'most wanted' list:
There are 5 family lines that I am having trouble 'breaking into' because of the time periods involved:
- MOUSSEAU (possibly 'dit Desilets')
- TRUDEAU
- RENAUD / DENEAU / DENAULT etc
- JOLY / JOLIE
- CHARBONNEAU / CHARBONNIER
- Francois Mousseau married Domithilde Hamel (my great-great grandparents), on 22 Nov 1825 at St Croix, in Lotbiniere, Quebec. His parents are listed in the marriage registry as Francois Mousseau and Julie Janveine (Venne, Voyne, Veine etc). I have not yet located their marriage records (ca 1779?)! (I have determined that the parents of Julie Venne are Jacques Venne and Marie-Therese Dalpec dit Parisot - I hope I am not in error here). During my hours of searching for the family of Francois Mousseau I have seen the surname often linked with the 'dit' name of Desilets - otherwise I have found nothing at all on the origins of Francois Mousseau senior!
A recent (Feb 99) has advised me that Francois' parents were actually Louis Mousseau and Madeleine Janveine? now that would also leave the parentage of Jacques Venne and Marie-Therese Dalpec as the parents on the other side also? Hmmm!
- Laurent Trudeau married Marguerite Trudel (my ggg grandparents), on 16 Feb 1784 at Paroisse de la Purification in Repentigny, Quebec. The marriage is found in 2 publications for the parish, with his parents listed as: Repentigny, page 116, "Jos & M. Ang RENEAU" and in Repentigny, complement, page 8 as "Jos et M. Angelique RENAUD; St Jacques". I have been unable to locate the marriage records for Joseph Trudeau and Marie Angelique Renaud (I have also seen her name listed as Angele); ca 1764? and so am unable to trace either surname (Trudeau and Renaud) back any further. In addition, I am seeking the home parish for their son Laurent Trudeau and Marguerite Trudel for the baptisms and marriages of their children (Judith Trudeau married Joseph Ricard (more gg grands) in 1810, in St Jacques, L'Achigan.)
- Jean-Baptiste Ricard married Marie-Jeanne Joly (more gg grands), 21 Nov 1774 at L'Assomption (per family info - I haven't found the records for verification yet). Her parents names are given as Antoine JOLY and Marie CHARBONNEAU/CHARBONNIER. I am seeking their marriage record ca 1752? I am hot on the trail of this couple due to e-mail correspondence this week (Nov 97). A kind gentleman located an entry in a Berthier registry "Marie Charbonneau, widow of Ant. Joly, married John BLOSSE dit Belhumeur, 21 Nov 1763 in Berthier, Quebec". He also sent me the birth and baptism dates for the three children of Antoine and Marie Joly - their marriage would have been before 1753, and his death prior to Nov 1763. It was noted that her surname was spelled Charbonnier in 2 out of the 3 baptismal records! Once again I am searching for the previous generation of both surnames (Joly and Charbonneau).
My mother, Ruby HAWTHORNE's ancestry is more of a mixed Protestant persuasion consisting of:
The Northern Irish connection - Archibald: son of Patrick
HAWTHORNE and Selina DOWNEY, married in 1847 in Killyleagh, County Down, Ireland. They homesteaded in Goulbourne Township, Carleton County, Ontario. Patrick's father John HAWTHORNE, a shoemaker, may have lived in Ballymacromwell, Co. Down; while Selena's father John DOWNEY, owned a farm at Ringdufferin, Co Down. The Hawthorne surname in Upper Canada is another that I want to make a search of in hopes of locating long lost 'cousins'.
The Scottish branch - Hetty : daughter of James CONDIE, an early
settler in Beachburg, Westmeath Township, Renfrew County, Ontario; who, with an already grown family, married
for the second time, to (Ann BROWN) the daughter of American immigrants mentioned below
and started a second large family. He was father of 21 children in all; they were still being born when he was in his 70's. There are an enormous number of Condies 'kicking' around today; James' brothers also settled in Upper Canada and they all appear to have had good sized families. James was a tailor, farmer and mill operator, although not for long, as his mill dam apparently collapsed and wiped out a mill owned by the Beach family further down river. The Condie family originated in and around Tillicoultry and Clackmannan, County of Clackmannanshire, Scotland, an area just north of Edinburgh and south of the Scottish 'highlands'. Apparently the birth registry of all of the children in the family except for James has been located in the Scottish Parish Records (go figure). There is a 'Path of Condie' north of the town of Clackmannan; a 'path' up into the hills, that I would love to travel one day.
Our 'almost' Loyalists (or Colonial Americans) - Ann Brown:
daughter of Jessie BROWN and (Canadian born) Annis HASKINS, a couple
descended from Americans that came up into Upper Canada in the late 1700's
with relatives and friends after the American Revolutionary war; most whom were U.E.L., I don't know why they weren't. The Jesse Brown line includes the McIntyre (McIntier etc) family, for whom there is a lengthy family tree listing on the IGI dating back to the original colonies and England; which I have not yet tried to verify - indeed I do not even know how to go about it. Apparently a couple of the McIntier daughter's put in 'loyalist' requests - but I do not know what the governments reply was to their applications (perhaps Obadiah McIntier died before he qualified? - more research looms ahead)
