  • S4C On the Web
    S4C Ar y We
The advent of a fourth channel was seen by many as an opportunity to aim for a new beginning in public service broadcasting in Wales. S4C was established by the 1980/81 Broadcasting Acts. Since 1982, all Welsh language programmes, from whatever source, have been transmitted on S4C to create one comprehensive Welsh medium service. Prior to S4C's establishment in the early 80s, the limited number of Welsh programmes produced were scattered throughout BBC1 and ITV schedules. Over the years S4C has developed a distinct role in the provision of public service broadcasting to a bilingual community. Its establishment also meant releasing the BBC and ITV to realise their English language obligations to viewers in Wales.

The beginnings of the Australian Welsh Male Choir can be traced back to Christmas 1973 when a gathering of predominantly Welsh expatriates at the Frankston Pines Soccer Club who enjoyed singing together decided to form a choir. Their first major engagement occurred on 20th October 1974 when they joined up with the fledgling choir of the Victorian Police Academy to perform at a dedication service for their chapel. This occasion is memorable as being the first live outside broadcast in colour by ABC Television.

"We play traditional acoustic music from South Wales. This includes tunes that we have learned from our parents and other local musicians playing in and around the festivals, clubs, ceilidhs and sessions in our locality over the past decade or so, along with some self-penned material. Many of the tunes in our repertoire are Welsh in origin, although they are equally Irish, Breton, Scottish or North American. All of which we play in 'our own unique style', which is the natural product of the sum of our musical influences".

What I have written can be considered a textbook for an introductory course in the Welsh language. My own experience with the Welsh language has been from teaching it to myself using Jones,[5] so I am well aware of the pitfalls that confront someone seeking to do likewise. This course is one suitable for beginners. The main emphasis of the course is in developing conversational skills in Welsh as it is currently spoken (as contrasted with teaching the forms needed for understanding literary Welsh). The material is an indirect descendent of the Cymraeg Byw movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This course does not assume a general proficiency in learning languages, nor any previous background in Welsh.

Combining genealogy with history and grass roots investigation, the founders of Origin Quest felt that, with the approach of the 21st Century, it was time to push back the barriers of traditional Family History Research. Back in 1991, the system of Origin Quest was conceived. The next step was to see if it would work in practice. Quickly, appeals went out in Welsh emigre journals. Those appeals were for the descendants of Welsh migrants to provide 'platforms' - the minimum being a validated name, date and place - so that full-scale family histories could be unearthed.
