Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada
The International Development Research Centre
is a public corporation created by the Canadian government to help communities
in the developing world find solutions to social, economic, and environmental
problems through research.
I looked at the IDRC's resource clock(shown below)and in 1 minute
there were 170 more people in the world and 8 hectares of productive land
gone. This snapshot of the clock was taken on October 13, 1998. Enter the
link above and check out what the population is today. Will we have over
6 billion people by the turn of the millennium? Can we sustain this growth?
Are we really sustaining it properly now? Keep in mind that most of the
new growth is coming from developing countries!

I did a similar count on January 24, 1999. In one minute I counted
169 more people and 7 less hectares of productive land. What, if anything,
is being done to see this change? In just over 3 months the world's population
has increased by 24 million. That's almost the size of Canada!! It seems
certain that we will see 6 billion people sometime in April.
